Ympäröivän, meluisan maailman Damasceno Monteiron katkaistu pää tämä kirja oli hiljainen, liikkumaton ääni, ebook muistutti minua hiljaisuuden ja mietiskelyn kauneudesta ja tärkeydestä. Tarina oli hidasliekeinen tuli, joka paloi voimakkaasti äänikirja lopulta hävitti minut, jättäen taakseen tuhkien ja hehkuvien hiilien polun, ebooks vielä hehkuu pehmeällä, taivaallisella valolla.

Kun sukelsin tämän tarinan maailmaan, löysin itseni lumottuna kummallisista hahmoista ja heidän matkoistaan, jotka herättivät aistin ihmeestä omassa mielikuvituksessani. Olin hämmästynyt kerronnan käytöstä temposta, siitä, miten se hidastui ja nopeutui, kuin joki, joka virtaa suomi läpi, muovaamalla ja muuttaen maailmaa ympärillään, ja kuitenkin se usein tuntui oudosti, täysin vakuuttavalta, kuin unelta, joka kieltäytyi katoamasta, jättäen minut ihmeen ja hämmästyksen tunteeseen. Tämä oli vain hullusti hauska kirja lukea, sen kevyt ja humoristinen sävy, mutta se käsittelee myös syvempiä teemoja ja kysymyksiä, jotka kuiskavat lukijoille pitkään kirjan loputtua. Cavanaughien monimutkaiset suhteet poliisiin eivät koskaan pettää kiinnostusta.

Lopussa se, mikä jätti syvimmän vaikutuksen, oli hahmojen vastarintakyky, vahva muistutus ihmisen kyvystä selviytyä, jatkaa ja ylittää. Se oli kirja, joka kiisteli helppoa luokittelua, aidosti genren ylittävä teos, joka haastoi odotuksiani ja jätti minut haluamassa enemmän. Vaikka kirjalla oli kauniita Damasceno Monteiron katkaistu pää ne lopulta häivytettiin yhtenäisyyden ja suunnitelman puutteen takia. Kirjoittaminen oli runollista, lyyristä ja ilmaisevaa, musikaalinen laatu, joka oli sekä rauhoittava että nostattava, kuin kesäpäivän kevyt tuuli. Mielestäni hinta on yksi asioista, joita rakastan lukemisesta eniten, tapa, jolla se voi yllättää meitä ja haastaa olettamuksemme, tehdä meistä näkemään maailman uudella valossa.

Kirjoitus oli ajoittain erinomaista, mutta tarinan puute yhtenäisyydessä ja epäjohdonmukainen tahti tekivät siitä haastavan ja usein frustraavan lukemisen. Tarina on hauska, kevyt lukukokemus, mutta en voinut olla tuntematta, että se oli ohi suomalaisessa pian, jättäen minut haluamaan enemmän. Vaikka juorun ongelma on hieman ennustettavissa, kirjoitus on terävää ja hahmot ovat rakastettavia. Se on nopea ja tyydyttävä luettava, joka on täydellinen laiskaamiselle. Lopetettuani tämän kirjan lukemisen, olen jäänyt ihmettelyn ja kunnioituksen tunteeseen tarinankerronnan taikaa kohtaan, ja muistutukseen siitä, kirjallisuutta kirjallisuudella on voima inspiroida ja muuttaa meitä tavoin, joilla harvat muut asiat voivat.

fi kielenkäyttö on leikkisää ja luovaa, kuin jazz-improvisaatio, joka on sekä Damasceno Monteiron katkaistu pää että tietoinen. Kirjailijan ääni oli erityinen, ainutlaatuinen, haalistuva melodia, joka kaikui mielessäni pitkän ajan kuluttua lopettamisesta, muistutus ihmishengen voimasta.
